Nikolaus Geyrhalter (*1972 in Vienna) is director, producer and cameraman. In 1994 he founded Nikolaus Geyrhalter Filmproduktion in the course of his first film production "Angeschwemmt". In 2012/2013 he was also a visiting professor in the field of photography and film at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna.
In his documentary films he always takes the camera himself and is known for his very personal cinematic signature. His works, sometimes described as observation films, are characterized by a static camera and a calm pace. Without commentary, he lets people and spaces take effect and thus gives the audience freedom of interpretation. "Almost any kind of additional information is irrelevant or even worse for Geyrhalter," wrote Rob Nelson of the Village Voice in New York.
Among his most famous works are Pripyat, Elsewhere, Our Daily Bread, Occident and Homo Sapiens.
