Dr. agr. Marwa Shumo a.k.a “The Lady of the Flies” is a Falling Walls Labs Finalist (2016), a Young Scientist of the "Council for the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings" (2020,2021 & 2023), SILBERSALZ Institute: Film School Scholar (2023), EIT Food Fellow (2021) and a Falling Walls Female Talents in Science Fellow (2022).
The Lady of the Flies gained a B.Sc. in Biotechnology (University of Nizwa, Oman), an MSc. in Environmental Sciences (University of Cologne, Germany) and a PhD in Agricultural Sciences (University of Bonn, Germany) and an International Doctorate in Development Studies (Center for Development Research/ZEF, Germany).
She is an expert on organic waste recycling, bioeconomy and researches possibilities for the industrial production of insects as food and feed. The starting point of her research was to identify innovative and alternative protein sources. This led to her intensive study of the black soldier fly, which is originally native to the tropics of South America, but is now widespread in many other parts of the world. Their larvae feed on organic waste and have a high nutritional value.
Marwa Shumo has held various positions in both industry and academia.
