What is the history of trust in science? The talk will explore the recent dramatic expansion of the role of science for society, which didn’t come hand in hand with an equally forceful development of an autonomous and efficient knowledge economy. To become a trustworthy basis for political and public decision-making, scientific knowledge needs autonomy, while offering effective an understandable interface to society. The history of trust in science is therefore the history of such knowledge economies, influenced by conflicting political, public, and economic interests.
