After graduating in medical studies at Rheinischen Friedrich-Wilhelm-Universität Bonn and approbation as a doctor in 1980, Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Seifert started his specialization in Internal Medicine in the Johanniter-Hospital in Bonn which he finished as Specialist for Internal Medicine in 1988. Afterwards, he began his education in medical microbiology and infection epidemiology at the Institute for Medical Microbiology and Hygiene at University of Cologne and finished in 1996 with a specialist qualification. In the same year, he got habilitated in Medical Microbiology and Hygiene. In 2000 he was appointed a university professor (C3) and Deputy Institute Director. Since 2006 he is a member of the examination board for the additional training in infectious diseases at the North Rhine Medical Association. He is the joint founder of Infectiological Consultancy Service at the teaching hospital of University Cologne – and leads the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program.

His interest in research focuses on molecular epidemiology and resistance mechanism of nosocomial infectious agents.

He is the author of more than 300 papers and articles.
