Julia Chen is in her first semester studying molecular biotechnology at the University of Heidelberg.
She attended the Helene Lange Gymnasium in Hamburg and completed her Abitur in 2023 and also an IB diploma.
For her IA (Internal Assessment Paper) in Biology, she addressed the question of how different wavelengths in the visible light spectrum affect the growth of bacterial colonies (Micrococcus Luteus, in short: ML). She explored this approach further as part of the Jugend forscht competition. Supported by the ZMNH and accompanied by the specialist Dr. Michaela Schweizer, Julia Chen examined the M.L. bacteria with a transmission electron microscope for morphological and quantitative qualities. For this research she received the 2nd place in the JuFo national competition as well as the NCL and SILBERSALZ special award.
