Jamais Vu: Turbulence (Work in Progress)
VR Experience / Ben Andrews, Emma Roberts / AU / 2023 / 10 min

Jamais Vu is the first chapter in a mixed reality docu-essay series that explores the relationship between VR, embodiment and misperception through the lens of vestibular disability.

The opposite of déjà vu, jamais vu (“never seen”) refers to the feeling of something mundane appearing suddenly unfamiliar: for XR artist Ben Joseph Andrews, it’s the first sign that a vestibular migraine attack is coming. In this experience, you are seated at a desk where you are guided to complete a series of hyper-simple everyday tasks. However, small changes in your perception make your understanding of space and self uncertain and unsettled. Every motor action requires a deeper negotiation between physical and virtual embodiment while questioning the nature of our constructed perception of reality.

(This experience is a work in progress and is appearing at the festival for user testing. You will be invited to answer a short survey after you have completed the experience)
